Introduction

Sarah Tyacke CB FSA FRhistS, Hon D PHiL, Leverhulme Emeritus
Research Fellow, and visiting professor, Royal Holloway, University of
london and Distinguished Research fellow, School of Advanced Study,
University of London, now Chair of the International Records Management
Trust (IRMT).She is also a governor of London Metropolitan University,a
council member of RHUL and a trustee of the Hakluyt Society which
publshes original texts in the history of travel and exploration. Recently Keeper of Public Records and Historical Manuscripts
Commissioner for the United Kingdom government and Chief Executive of
the National Archives of England and Wales from 1992-2005. Responsible
for the establishment of the National Archives which merged the Public
Record Office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission from April
2003; for the strategic appoach to records management and digital
records in the UK government and for the implementation of the Freedom
of Information Act 2005 as it affected the historical record.
Previously responsible for building the new Public Record Office
building at Kew (1995) and for the award winning Family Records Centre
(1997) and for the establishement of the online digital services of the
National Archives ( www.nationalarchives.gov.uk).
The National Archives is a charter mark organisation and serves 300,000
visitors a year and delivers about 116 million online page-impressions
a year including full transactional services. She is now researching in the history of cartography (see current
work) and is due to deliver the Sandars lectures in Cambridge in March
2007;she is also continuing to work and write in the archival and
records management fields. She recently completed a report on the
archival and records system in Finland for the Finnish government (www.minedu.fi/minedu/news/pr/2006/National%20Archives.html) and is now advising the National Library and National Archives in Cuba.
